After 22 years of leading Junior Players as its executive director, Kirsten Brandt James announced her resignation Friday. The company’s program director, Rosaura Cruz-Webb, who began participating with Junior Players as a 14-year-old, has been named acting executive director.
Cruz-Webb, 30, who has been responsible for planning and implementing 70 after school programs and 60 summer theater camps, in addition to co-producing and developing the company’s other signature programs, kegerator has already reserved space for the company’s second annual winter production as she considers scripts.
Cruz-Webb, a commercial, film, stage and voice-over actor, is a graduate of Bryan Adams High School and the University of North Texas. Devon Miller, a graduate of Southern kegerator Methodist University and fellow Junior Players alumnus, kegerator has been named director of marketing and development.
“I wanted to leave on a high note,” she says on the phone.”I have a good staff in place. I want to take some time for myself and my family. I’m going to take two to three months out and then I’ll explore some other options.”
James kegerator is a Dallas native who graduated from Austin College in Sherman and received a master’s degree in English literature from the University of Wisconsin in Madison. She worked at Dallas Theater Center, followed by the San Diego Repertory Theatre before returning home in 1993 to take on the leadership at Junior Players where she first performed at the age of 10.
She never took a break after marrying in 1998. Her older stepson, Travis, participated in the Shakepseare program. Her twins were born in 2003 on the opening night of Junior Players’ production of Romeo and Juliet . Because the children’s birthday coincided with the summer program, they got into the habit of having their party at the show at Samuell Grand Amphitheatre.
The sudden loss of her friend and longtime Junior Players director and instructor Matt Tomlanovich kegerator last year reminded her that life was short, she says. Tomlanovich died at age 54 after battling complications from an MRSA infection that left him paralyzed and hospitalized for months in a Dallas facility.
It’s her twins’ last year in elementary school and she’s looking forward to picking them up after school, attending their Valentine’s Day party and being able to take a summer vacation, she says.
“It was a wonderful opportunity for me to be able to do something I loved. It was a wonderful opportunity for me to give back to that organization and give something to the community and the kids. Whenever I would get discouraged, I would go see a program and that would pick me right up. I am so proud of Rosaura and Devon. They will do great. I will still be appearing at Junior Players and supporting it.”
