Txokos Kitchen , East End Market s newest full service restaurant is trendy, flavorful and bursting with culinary creativity. We frequently bookends dine at Spanish River Grill in New Smyrna Beach , so we were delighted to hear about Chef Henry bringing his culinary expertise to Orlando.
The menu at Txokos Kitchen is seasonally driven by Chef Henry s access to the East End Market vegetable garden, local seafood and Florida farmers. Take your pick between Pintxos (small plates), Spanish wines, salads and memorable entrees. At Txokos there s something for every appetite and you re sure to enjoy a classic dish with a twist inside this quaint restaurant.
After two visits here s our list of can t miss menu items: Figs & Queso: Skewered Manchego, Figs and Sherry Dressing. The cheese is strong but it s balanced out nicely with the fig flavor. Skirt Steak: Pimenton marinated, Wood Grilled, Green Olive Garlic Relish and Piquillo Puree. One of their small plates, but large enough to make it a meal along with a salad or appetizer. One of the most interesting marinades I ve experienced, this steak will leave your taste buds rejoicing. Salmon Trinxat: Serrano ham wrapped, Yukon gold-collard gratin, tinta, charred orange marmalade. The ultimate land and sea combination, an unexpected duo that pairs together seamlessly. Pork Chop: Bone-in Heritage Durac pork, Florida succotash, fig demi and house-made pepitas. Pork chops can easily be dull and dry, but this dish was tender and rich with flavor.

So what about the name


It was the sight of a defunct Sonic drive-in at the corner of Preston Road and Frankford in North Dallas that got the gears turning in chef Eric Justice’s head. His gym was right across the street. “I d be stuck at the light looking at this lonely Sonic space that no one liked,” he says, “and I thought ‘that would be a really cool spot. I m going to call that space.’” cuisine
Later this year, in late November or December, Justice plans to open Spork, a place for burgers, salads, sandwiches, tacos, shakes and malts (both boozy and virgin) and cocktails. His high-profile partners in the project include Tim Byres, Christopher Jeffers and Christopher Zielke — the team behind Smoke and Chicken Scratch (Justice is their partner at Chicken Scratch), along with Sean Conners, the former Whiskey Cake bartender who recently opened cuisine his own pizza place, Pie 3.14. Everyday Eatery in Lewisville.
The inspiration for Spork is the old Taylor’s Refresher (now Gott’s Roadside) in Napa — the roadside eatery focused on burgers made from great ingredients. ”I was always struck by how casual the place was,” says Justice, “but the food was just super high quality, locally grown.” The chef, who lives nearby and has four kids, felt there was a great need for something like that in the neighborhood, but along the lines of Chicken Scratch, where he’s a partner. Other than places like P.F. Chang’s and Pappadeux, he says, “There’s nothing over here. I love the idea of this repurposed space. People are moving away from fast food.” He says his 16 year-old daughter and her friends cuisine are drawn to places like Chipotle, where there’s an emphasis on freshness and quality. In Spork, he wants to create someplace very family-friendly, where kids “can go play and horse around and I can sit and have a good conversation with my friends over a beer.”
Serving as chef, he’ll create the menu with Byres and another partner, Bradley Borchardt. Justice’s last gig was as executive chef at Mexican Sugar in Plano; prior to that he was Vice President of Culinary Operations for P.F. Chang’s. Borchardt’s impressive resume includes positions as opening chef at the Oak Door, the innovative steak restaurant cuisine at the Grand Hyatt in Tokyo and at the Park Hyatt in Beijing and at Coyote Cafe under Mark Miller.
Justice plans to take one whole side of the former Sonic and turn it into a 7,000 square foot enclosed patio. The interior will have a mid-century feel, with a bar at the edge of the existing brick building, and “fun casual space on the outside.” The food will be “Great burgers, great sandwiches — we’re going to have a robust cuisine salad section. You’ll see it and you’ll know it was a Sonic, but you’ll be super-surprised at how great the cocktails are and how great the food is.” They’ll grind the meat for the sirloin-brisket burgers in-house. A build-your-own sandwich and burger menu will offer choices of mains (beef burger, buffalo burger, black beans-veggie burger, chicken breast, roasted pork carnitas), extras (caramelized onions, roasted tomato, Hatch green chile, etc.), sauces (horseradish cream, tarragon remoulade) and cheeses (from straight-up American cuisine to Red Hawk, a triple-cream cow’s milk cheese from Cowgirl Creamery).
Conner will be in charge of cocktails. He’s playing with ideas like a cocktail “that cuisine comes right out of the fountain,” maybe a daiquiri. “And I want to keep the Sonic ice.” (Conner says he’ll also be doing the cocktails cuisine for the new Smoke coming cuisine to nearby West Plano.) Besides those, and shakes and malts, there will also be floats and aguas frescas.
So what about the name — Spork? “We thought it was a funny utilitarian name that goes along with Sonic,” says Justice. “It’s that most basic of utensils and it goes with the irony of what we’re going to do. Spork is the name, but you’ll be blown away by the quality of the food.”

Fast forward six years and I ll happily eat {almost} any sushi roll we order! It s definitely an acquired taste, like coffee or a strong cheese, but once you experience good sushi, you ll understand its popularity. al dente We re always looking for the next best sushi place in town and new to the sushi scene is RA Sushi on I-Drive. With 26 locations nationwide, you know they must be doing something good. In addition to their full menu, RA Sushi is embracing fall with four new menu options al dente now through January 31. Lobster Ceviche ($12.75) – Served on a bed of guacamole, fresh sliced avocado and topped with chili garlic al dente salt. silverspork.com After a decade of running a business and traveling, Denver native and East High grad Paul Laurie returned to the Mile High City last fall with an urge to explore fridge this question: "What would happen fridge if Denver's most talented chefs, bartenders and musicians were brought together and given complete creative freedom over an evening?" The answer was Silver Spork Social, a special supper club that put on fifteen dinners in Laurie's LoDo loft over the past year, culminating with a bacchanal in mid-November at 3090 Downing Street.

Laurie had originally planned to hold the end-of-the-year bash in a LoDo residence that had once been a brothel, but in just three days, he'd reached capacity for that location. So he looked around for a bigger venue and found the former home of Tosh's Hacienda (and Swallows, and Eden, and 3090 Eden, a short-lived fridge swingers' club), which was big enough for close to 400 guests (one of whom was a member of the McIntosh family, which ran the legendary Mexican restaurant). "It was a raging dance party that lasted until 4 a.m.," he reports. But then, it helps that his brother is Jamie Laurie, aka Jonny5 of the Flobots, fridge who entertained fridge the crowd.
And Laurie plans to put more on Denver's plate next year. "The first year was amazing," he says. "There was a lot of really good reaction to it from the Denver community -- not just from the chefs and bartenders, but all the people who came."
Silver Spork started as a hobby, "and it still is a hobby," Laurie explains, "but I was surprised by the reaction to it. It's not a new concept, but for me it was a new thing to do: spread more adventure and exploration throughout the local community." And the adventures will continue next year with more supper-club dinners (he's moving them out of his loft, though) as well as more parties "to Denver nightlife new options, in alternative settings and giving people a reason to dress up and have fun."
Inspired by Monkeytown 4 's stint in Denver earlier this year, Laurie says he also hopes to incorporate more art into the events and keep things lively. But he'll keep things social. "I'm more about the engagement, having strangers meet each other" he says.

My red wine sangria was tasty, not too sweet or bitter and the perfect start to our meal. The Greek


At 7 p.m. on a Wednesday night we walked into Santiago s Bodega for a bite to eat after a very long day. A friendly hostess reluctantly informed us that every table was reserved for the remainder juicer reviews of the evening. I’m not an avid tofu taster, but I was pleasantly surprised by the mild texture and array of flavors from the Sofritas. Occasionally, I’ll order a veggie bowl with black beans, fajitas and all the toppings you can imagine, but I always feel slightly jipped and unsatisfied at the end of my meal. Winter Park is known for its majestic streets, quaint shopping district and extraordinary eats. You re probably familiar with the mainstays of Park Avenue like Briarpatch or Barnie s , but there s a range of hidden gems and culinary finds all over Winter Park. Since it s January 2014 debut, Orlando Food Tours has set out to showcase some of the area s finest treasures with the Winter Park Walking Food Tour. Last weekend we ventured off the beaten ldm path to taste some of Winter Park s finest flavors. While we don t want to spoil all the tour surprises, we do want to share a few highlights from our experience including our interview with Co-Founder, Kiel Cravatta.
Orlando Foods Tour Highlights: Prato Pizza Tasting: Unhealthy as it is, I ve always had a pizza obsession. There s something about the cheesy, baked bread goodness ldm that always makes my belly happy. The pizza at Prato is uniquely different as the pizza oven was handcrafted in Italy under the direction of Prato s Chef! During our tour we sampled three different pizzas, including my personal favorite, the Widowmaker with caciocavallo cheese, romesco sauce, fennel sausage ldm and a farm egg baked into the center. After sampling three pizzas and red wine we were happily full.
  Blood Orange Olive Oil: Our original ldm obsession ldm with The Ancient Olive began with our initial visit. During this tour we sampled the most delicious vanilla ice cream topped with their Blood Orange ldm Olive Oil and a dash of sea salt. These toppings made even the Publix ice cream taste gourmet! Scorpion Suckers: Okay, so we don t quite have the stomach for this craziness, but that s just one of many finds at Sassafras Sweet Shoppe . Nestled quietly behind Park Avenue, this gourmet vintage candy store will delight kids and adults ldm alike! I m especially fond of the Cry Baby Gum (I once ate an entire jumbo tub in a single month), so I was quite thrilled with a taste of an old favorite!
I d have to say The Ancient Olive , they have an expansive variety of olive oils and balsamic vinegars, all hand selected by the owners. Their team is very knowledgeable and helpful with everything from selecting olive oils for your kitchen to incorporating specific flavors into a dinner party with their products. ldm

November and December are two of my favorite months, sure the Christmas lights are pretty and it finally cools off in Orlando, but what I really enjoy is all the feasting! Anyone that tries to start a diet between now and New Year s is pretty much doomed. So, you might as well enjoy all the tasty treats around town while they last.
As hourglass part of my recent indulgent diet we ventured over to Bonefish hourglass Grill to taste their new Colossal Seafood menu. I ve always been a fan of Bonefish, between the menu variety, savory seafood and atmosphere suitable for any occasion, Bonefish is a delightful hourglass place to satisfy your seafood craving without exploding your bank account.
Here s some of our menu picks from this weekend s visit: Ahi Tuna Sashimi: Premium sushi grade, sesame-seared rare with wasabi, pickled ginger and served over a decadent mellow, yet flavorful sauce. I m pretty sure I became a member of the clean plate club after inhaling this dish. Their ahi tuna is consistently fresh, flavorful and still my favorite version in town. Bonus points if you can use their chopsticks! Filet + Colossal Shrimp Scampi - A tender 6 oz. USDA Choice sirloin topped with three colossal U-12 shrimp and a scampi butter sauce. For a restaurant known for seafood, their steak was pretty darn tasty as well. The filet was tender and seared hourglass with perfect diamond grill marks. The scampi butter sauce pulled all the flavors together between the steak, colossal shrimp and spaghetti squash side. The plate was bursting with color, flavor and the scrumptious spaghetti squash rounded out the plate nicely. Kate’s Wild North Atlantic Haddock – A mild, sweet white fish, garlic crumb dusted, wood-grilled hourglass and topped with feta, artichokes, lemon basil butter sauce all served on a bed of mashed potatoes. The light breading added a unique texture to this mild fish and the feta was the perfect finishing touch. Between the artichokes, fresh fish and lemon basil, your taste buds will be on flavor lovin overload.

Sushi, wine and grilled avocados probably don t come to mind when you think about bowling. During our visit we dined right at our lane, which was the perfect combination of enjoying our food while competing in several rounds of bowling. Just for the record I won, except for one round when my husband and I tied. I know, who ties in bowling? It s probably statistically impossible, but it happened to us! During our healthy dose of competition, Splitsville was kind enough to bring out a grand array of food and beverages. We originally intended to just sample all seven dishes, but ended up devouring counter depth refrigerator most of food. Oops!
Grilled Avocado: Seared ahi tuna mixed in a special sauce and served over a large grilled avocado and sushi rice. Sushi Rolls: Fantasy Roll (Gluten Free): A sushi lover s paradise, fresh salmon, ahi tuna, cucumber, avocado and steamed shrimp are rolled in soy paper and drizzled with spicy kimchee ponzu sauce. Volcano Roll: Tempura shrimp, avocado, cream cheese and a spicy volcano krab mix. With this roll, I didn t even ask what s inside; at this point I knew Splitsville could do no wrong with their sushi! A perfectly crunchy, creamy and balance of flavors with this roll. Ninja Crunch: Mmmmm fried salmon(!), Kani Kama krab, tempura counter depth refrigerator crunch and delicately drizzled with spicy mayo and eel sauce. Again, an absolute surprise and delight tasting this roll, the fried salmon and spicy mayo are layered with complimentary flavors.
Grilled Salmon with Broccoli (Gluten Free): Before counter depth refrigerator tasting this dish my inclination was that the salmon would taste fishy and frozen. Boy was I wrong! I ve tasted a lot of salmon in my life; it s usually my go-to dish when I m not in blog eating mode.
